Rumi and Ghazal




This article proposes a typology of the ghazals of Rumi in which there are various speaking personae and addressees.  Understanding the different types of address, and the sometimes sudden shift in the voices of the poems helps us better understand their structure and message.

The Foundation for Iranian Studies invites applications for its annual award of $1000 for the best Ph.D. dissertation in a field of Iranian Studies. Students completing their dissertations between July 1, 2015 and June 30, 2016 are eligible to apply for the 2016 award.

 

Dissertations must be nominated by the author's advisor and be accompanied by the Dissertation Committee's letter of acceptance. Both documents may be emailed provided they contain appropriate official insignias and signatures.

 

Applicants for the 2016 award should submit a digital copy of the dissertation, either mailed on disc to

The Changing Concept of the “intellectual” in Iran

Iranian intellectuals entered the modern era in an odd and paradoxical way. For more than four generations they had shared an epistemological confidence in Western rationality coupled with a general political mistrust toward Western societies. As such, the very unity of the West was not considered as a given.. For over 100 years they embraced and appropriated Western political and cultural values while at the same time keeping a critical distance from it.
